چکیده

Fluxes of total CO2, 02, NO3-+NO2-, NH,', DON (dissolved organic nitrogen) and HSwere measured across the interface of a coastal bay sediment for 43 d. The seawater overlying the defaunated sediment cores was changed continuously. Two treatments were employed: oxygenated overlying water (OX-cores) and anoxic water (AN-cores). Fluxes were measured before and after addition of an organic substrate, and loss of POM (particulate organic matter) was measured at the end of the experiment. Loss of POC (particulate organic carbon) from the sediment was the same under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. However, the highest efflux of CO2 was measured in the OX-cores, and the highest efflux of DOC occurred in the AN-cores before and after addition of fresh substrate. Similarly, loss of PON (particulate organic nitrogen) from the sediment was the same in the 2 treatments, but the highest fluxes of NH,' and DON were measured In the AN-cores. Our conclusion is that degradation of POM is the same under both aerobic and anaerobic condltlons, but that mineralization of organic molecules is less effective under anaerobic condlhons. Before substrate addi t~on there was an influx of NO3in both OXand AN-cores, and the estimated nitrification rate in the OX-cores was 1 to 2 mm01 m-' d-l The estimated denitrification rate contributed 3 to 6 '10 to total carbon respiration. After addition of the substrate, fluxes of all constituents increased. The estimated denitrification rate constituted < 3 '10 of total respiration. There was a large efflux of HSin AN-cores During the experimental period, the losses of original POC and PON were calculated to be 2.6 and 4.0 %, respectively. Relative to the initial values, the pore water constituents increased with incubation, and the integrated AN/OX ratios for NHdf , DON and total CO2 were 1.2, 1.5 and 1.6, respectively, after 43 d.

Effect of sediment toxicity on anaerobic microbial metabolism.

Mineralization of a readily biodegradable aromatic compound (benzoate) by intrinsic microorganisms in the anoxic sediment was used to quantify the inhibitory effect of heavily contaminated sediment from the Arthur Kill estuary (NY/NJ Harbor system, USA) on the anaerobic metabolism by naturally present bacterial populations. In anoxic microcosms, the effect of varying ratios of contaminated sedi...

Efficiency of SBR Process with a Six Sequence Aerobic-Anaerobic Cycle for Phosphorus and Organic Material Removal from Municipal Wastewater

Background: Various chemical, physical and biologic treatment methods are being used to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a modified activated sludge process that removes phosphorus and organic material from sanitary wastewater, biologically. Methods: This study was conducted in 2016.The performance of an aerobic-anaerobic SBR pilot device, locat...

Complete mineralization of benzene by aquifer microorganisms under strictly anaerobic conditions.

Benzene was mineralized to CO2 by aquifer-derived microorganisms under strictly anaerobic conditions. The degradation occurred in microcosms containing gasoline-contaminated subsurface sediment from Seal Beach, California, and anaerobic, sulfide-reduced defined mineral medium supplemented with 20 mM sulfate. Benzene, at initial concentrations ranging from 40 to 200 microM, was depleted in all m...

Effects of augmentation of coarse particulate organic matter on metabolism and nutrient retention in hyporheic sediments

1. Metabolic and biogeochemical processes in hyporheic zones may depend on inputs of coarse particulate organic matter. Our research focused on how differing quantity and quality of organic matter affects metabolism and nutrient retention in the hyporheic zone of a first-order Appalachian stream. 2. Sixteen plots were established on a tributary of Hugh White Creek, NC, U.S.A. Sediment was extra...

Effects of the coexisting Baltic amphipods Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata on the fate of a simulated spring diatom bloom

A laboratory experiment was performed to quantify the fate of diatom phytodetritus and how this is affected by the presence of benthic amphipods. A Baltic Sea spring bloom sedimentation event was simulated by adding 14C-labeled diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) to microcosms with varying densities of the amphipods Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, as well as to microcosms without amphip...
